In a world where AI is becoming an essential part of work, the best leaders won’t simply manage people they’ll also communicate with machines. AI isn’t just another tool; it’s a new kind of collaborator, and knowing how to work with it strategically will set leaders apart.

When I started using AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude and Replit in my workflow, I expected the challenge to be technical. I thought the hard part would be understanding complex models and algorithms.

But I was wrong.

The real challenge? Learning how to communicate with AI effectively.

I discovered three key principles for communicating with AI that not only improved my workflow but also strengthened my leadership communication skills: Clarity, Context, and Collaboration.

The 3C’s of AI Leadership: Clarity, Context, and Collaboration

AI is powerful and, at times, can infer patterns.

However, like humans, it’s not infallible.

While large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Claude can generate highly contextual responses, they don’t truly 'understand' meaning or intent.

They operate probabilistically, meaning that even with identical inputs, their outputs can vary due to their non-deterministic nature. This non-determinism arises because these models can produce different outputs for the same input on different runs, influenced by factors like model architecture and training data.

For instance, OpenAI notes that their Chat Completions are non-deterministic by default, leading to varied outputs across requests.

AI can also 'hallucinate'—generating plausible but incorrect or completely fabricated information. The frequency of these hallucinations varies.

For example, Anthropic reported that their Claude 2.1 model achieved a twofold reduction in false statements compared to their previous Claude 2.0 model, indicating ongoing efforts to enhance reliability.

Leaders who master AI fluency by

  • structuring precise inputs

  • verifying outputs, and

  • understanding limitations

will drive better outcomes in both AI-powered and human-led teams.

Here’s how.

Clarity: Be Precise to Get What You Need

Just like in leadership, vague instructions lead to inconsistent results.

AI doesn’t infer intent the way a human would; it follows instructions as given. If your request is too broad or ambiguous, the AI will generate responses that may miss key details or require additional refinement.

Leadership Parallel: Think about how you delegate to your team. If you provide unclear guidance, the results won’t align with your expectations, leading to inefficiencies and frustration.

The same applies to AI: clear, structured communication leads to better execution.

Example:

  • Poor Prompt: "Create a project plan."

  • Clear Prompt: "Create a 30-day project roadmap for launching a new customer retention strategy. Include key milestones, deliverables, and KPIs, formatted as a table."

🚀 Pro Tip: AI tools respond best to specificity. Adding formatting instructions (e.g., “provide a bullet-point summary” or “return a table”) can further improve results.

Context: Understanding the System Makes You More Effective

Effective leaders don’t just give directives—they understand the tools and processes their teams rely on. Similarly, working effectively with AI requires a basic understanding of how these models function.

AI models are probabilistic, meaning they generate responses based on likelihoods rather than strict logic. Even with identical prompts, AI may return different results due to its non-deterministic nature. Tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Replit’s AI leverage underlying frameworks that influence their outputs.

Leadership Parallel: Great executives don’t need to be engineers, but they do need to understand business models and financial statements. The same applies to AI fluency—leaders don’t have to code, but understanding AI’s limitations and strengths allows them to set realistic expectations and frame better requests.

🚀 Pro Tip: Want to refine AI-generated results? Instead of re-asking the same question, provide feedback within the prompt:

  • Example: "Your last response was too general. Can you refine it with industry-specific examples and supporting data?"

Collaboration: AI is a Strategic Partner, Not Just a Tool

The best leaders don’t work alone—they assemble and optimize high-performing teams. AI should be viewed the same way: not as a simple tool but as a collaborator that enhances productivity, decision-making, and innovation.

Rather than using AI in isolation, consider how multiple AI tools can work together to maximize effectiveness.

For example, ChatGPT can refine strategic messaging, Claude can analyze long-form reports, and Replit’s AI can automate coding tasks. This synergy allows leaders to get more nuanced, reliable results.

Leadership Parallel: Just as cross-functional teams enhance business outcomes, leveraging AI’s diverse strengths creates better solutions. The key is knowing which tool to use for which purpose.

🚀 Pro Tip: When using multiple AI tools, treat them like specialized team members. Assign different AI models distinct roles based on their capabilities to get the best results.

The Bottom Line

AI fluency is a superpower

AI isn’t here to replace leaders—it’s here to elevate them. The most effective leaders of tomorrow will be those who can seamlessly collaborate with both people and AI, leveraging clarity, context, and collaboration to drive better decisions and outcomes.

The question isn’t whether AI will be part of your work—it already is. The real question is: How well will you communicate with it?

Your challenge this week: Take one step to refine your AI communication skills. Test a new prompt, experiment with a different AI tool, or analyze how you structure requests. Small shifts in communication can lead to big results.

Go for it!
